Chapter 28 - The Boy Who Could Say Stop

During the scavenger relay, Caleb’s team reached the third station.
He was laughing.
Then he felt tightness in his chest.
Not severe.
But familiar.
Last year he would have hidden it.
Champions don’t make excuses.
This year he raised his hand.
“Stop.”
His teammates stopped.
Teacher stopped.
Sarah approached calmly.
“What’s up?”
“Breathing feels tight.”
“Good job telling me.”
She followed his plan.
No panic.
No crowd gathering.
No father shouting.
Grant watched from the bleachers.
Every instinct in his old self wanted to run down.
He stayed seated.
Emily looked at him.
“That’s hard, isn’t it?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
He almost laughed.
Caleb recovered quickly.
Sarah asked:
“Want to return or sit out?”
He considered.
“Sit out.”
Grant closed his eyes.
A year ago he would have heard failure.
Now he heard judgment.
Caleb’s.
His own body.
His own choice.
Grant stood when Caleb returned to the bleachers.
“Proud of you.”
Caleb looked suspicious.
“I quit.”
“No.”
Grant shook his head.
“You stopped when you needed to.”
Caleb stared at him.
Then smiled.
A small smile.
May you like
But real.
