Chapter 24 - Victor and Caleb

Victor requested to see Caleb.
Emily refused initially.
Months later, after therapy and mediation, Caleb chose a short supervised visit.
Victor arrived without gifts.
That was unusual.
He looked older.
“Hey, champ.”
Caleb frowned.
“Don’t call me that.”
Victor stopped.
“Okay.”
They sat.
Victor said:
“I heard you joined astronomy club.”
“Yeah.”
“I don’t know anything about astronomy.”
“I know.”
Victor almost smiled.
Then Caleb asked:
“Did you know the red drink was bad for me?”
Victor could lie.
Everyone in the room knew it.
Instead:
“I knew your doctor said not to have it.”
“Then why?”
Victor stared at his hands.
“I thought I knew better.”
“Why?”
Because he had spent seventy years believing confidence and competence were the same.
“I was arrogant.”
Caleb had never heard him use that word.
“Are you sorry?”
“Yes.”
“Are you sorry because Dad kicked you out of the company?”
Victor flinched.
“No.”
Caleb looked unconvinced.
Victor corrected himself.
“That made me pay attention. I wish I had paid attention before.”
Better.
Not perfect.
Caleb nodded.
“I don’t want you at my sports stuff.”
Victor’s eyes filled.
“Okay.”
“And don’t tell me inhalers are weak.”
“I won’t.”
Caleb stood.
Visit over.
Victor did not ask for more.
