Chapter 17 - Victor Falls

Victor’s position deteriorated.

Lawson Performance’s independent review found he had bypassed company policy by storing adult supplement products at school.

He had pressured staff to use Briarwood for promotional access.

He had failed to disclose related-party transactions.

Nothing about it was one spectacular crime.

It was accumulation.

Entitlement documented in invoices.

Emails.

Contracts.

Board minutes.

Grant led the vote removing Victor as chairman emeritus.

Victor attended in person.

“You owe me everything.”

Grant looked at the table where his father once sat at the head.

“I owe you a lot.”

“Then act like it.”

“I also owe Caleb something.”

“What?”

“A chance not to become us.”

Victor stared.

The vote passed.

Afterward Victor stood alone in the hallway.

Grant almost followed.

Then stopped.

He could love his father without rescuing him from consequences.

A lesson he should have learned years earlier.

Victor later agreed to financial restitution related to undisclosed school transactions.

He was permanently barred from Briarwood governance.

He fought the naming-rights removal and lost arbitration because the morals clause applied.

The giant LAWSON lettering came down from the athletic center.

Caleb watched workers remove it during a school day.

A classmate asked:

“Was that your family?”

Caleb said:

“Yeah.”

“Are you sad?”

He thought.

“A little.”

Then returned to his astronomy book.

A family name did not disappear because letters came off a building.

May you like

But maybe its meaning could change.
