Spring approached.
Briarwood announced field day.
Caleb immediately said he wasn’t participating.
Emily said:
“Okay.”
Grant said:
“Okay.”
The speed of their agreement surprised him.
A week later Caleb changed his mind.
“I want to do the science scavenger relay.”
Not sprinting.
Teams solved clues across the field.
Sarah reviewed his action plan.
His cardiologist cleared normal activity with appropriate precautions.
Caleb asked:
“Will everyone watch me?”
“No more than anyone else.”
“Will Dad?”
“If you want him there.”
Caleb thought.
“Yes.”
Then:
“But no Grandpa.”
Emily nodded.
Grant accepted.
No argument.
The night before field day, Caleb packed his inhaler with Emily.
Then checked it himself.
Not because adults had frightened him.
