Chapter 26 - The Bottle on Sarah’s Desk

The morning of field day, Sarah found a bottle on her desk.
Clear plastic.
Plain water.
A note:
FOR CALEB. CHECKED WITH MOM. — GRANT
Sarah almost laughed.
Grant had not given it directly to Caleb.
He had brought it to Sarah first.
Not because every water bottle required nurse approval.
Because he understood the symbolism.
She called him.
“You know water is allowed.”
“I know.”
“You didn’t need permission.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
Grant paused.
“Because last year I thought being his father meant nobody could tell me no.”
Sarah said nothing.
“This year I wanted him to see me ask.”
She looked through the window.
Caleb was setting up a cardboard Saturn display for astronomy club.
“That matters.”
“Are we okay?”
Sarah answered honestly.
“We’re professional.”
Grant accepted it.
He was not entitled to friendship because he apologized.
May you like
“That’s fair.”
