Chapter 13 - Victor’s Secret Agreement

The Lawson donation was not purely charitable.
A side letter existed.
Victor had negotiated preferential access to Briarwood facilities for Lawson Performance youth programs.
Discounted leases.
Brand placement.
Filming rights.
Parent marketing access.
Nothing automatically illegal.
But the school had not disclosed the full arrangement to families.
One provision allowed Lawson Performance to host “performance education sessions.”
Those sessions introduced products and services sold by Lawson affiliates.
Sarah stared.
“They turned school into a customer funnel.”
Emily added:
“And used our kids as marketing.”
Grant had signed one version of the agreement after becoming CEO.
Again, he could not claim ignorance.
He read it now with new eyes.
At the time it looked like partnership.
Now it looked like a boundary failure.
Grant called an emergency Lawson board meeting.
“I want every youth-school agreement suspended pending review.”
Victor joined remotely.
“You’re dismantling the division.”
“Yes.”
“Because one nurse embarrassed you?”
Grant stared at the screen.
“Sarah didn’t embarrass me.”
“You were arrested in front of the school.”
“Because I hit her.”
Victor’s face hardened.
“You sound weak.”
Grant almost laughed.
That word.
Always.
Weak.
He had spent thirty-eight years running from it.
“Maybe.”
The board voted.
Victor expected loyalty.
He lost seven to two.
Lawson Performance suspended school-based product promotion and created independent medical compliance review.
TitanSport still did not resume acquisition talks.
Grant accepted that.
After the meeting Victor waited outside.
“You chose strangers over family.”
Grant answered:
“No. I finally chose my son over the family story.”
Victor slapped the hood of Grant’s car.
“You think Caleb will respect a father who apologizes to everyone?”
“I hope he respects one who tells the truth.”
Victor walked away.
Grant shook badly afterward.
At thirty-eight, defying his father still made him feel ten.
That realization gave him more compassion for Caleb.
And more shame.
May you like
Because he had demanded from his son the courage he himself had avoided.
