Chapter 9 - Ranger’s Records

Noah’s unit turned over Ranger’s historical maintenance archive.

The forged certification was not isolated.

Seven documents used my name after I had entered protection.

Dates when Evelyn Hart could not possibly have signed anything.

Each document validated equipment later sold through Meridian.

Who created them?

Metadata traced early versions to a Hartwell server.

Later copies to Meridian.

Marcus’s corporate counsel began cooperating.

That made him unpopular with his board.

Apex Strategic paused the $780 million merger.

Hartwell stock was privately held, but lenders reacted.

Marcus called Laura.

Not me.

“He wants to disclose more.”

I agreed to another recorded meeting.

Marcus looked exhausted.

“The board may remove me.”

“Maybe they should.”

“Yes.”

That surprised me.

He continued.

“I found the false certifications three years ago.”

“You said that.”

“I didn’t tell you what I did.”

I waited.

“I asked Sloane to destroy them.”

My stomach dropped.

“You what?”

“I thought if we eliminated false documents before they were used again—”

“That is obstruction.”

“I know.”

“You know now.”

“Yes.”

Marcus did not ask me to defend him.

Good.

He admitted he instructed Sloane to “clean up” legacy records instead of reporting them.

Sloane copied and reused them through Meridian.

Marcus tried to bury fraud.

Instead he preserved the person who understood how to repeat it.

That became the central tragedy of our family.

Every concealment created the next offense.
