Chapter 18 - I Testify

The grand jury room did not feel dramatic.
No cameras.
No spectators.
I answered questions.
My reports.
My conversations with Marcus.
Colonel Sloane.
Mara.
Equipment records.
Threats.
Protection.
My father’s notebook.
When asked whether I personally witnessed Sloane receive money, I said no.
When asked whether Marcus admitted knowing false billing occurred, I described exactly what he said.
Precision.
No revenge.
At one point the prosecutor asked:
“Why did you wait five years to reemerge?”
I answered:
“I did not choose the timing. My location became compromised.”
Then:
“Did you want to remain hidden?”
I thought of June.
Ranger.
Hannah.
“Yes.”
“Why testify now?”
May you like
“Because hiding from danger and hiding from truth stopped being the same thing.”
That answer surprised even me.
