Chapter 14 - June Learns My Real Story

I returned to Cedar Falls briefly under security to collect additional belongings.

June closed the diner for the afternoon.

No customers.

No reporters.

Just us.

She sat in Booth Four.

“Tell me something that was real before Hannah.”

I thought.

“My mother died when I was twenty-six.”

June nodded.

“My father and I fought constantly.”

“Believable.”

“I hate mayonnaise.”

“You told me that.”

“Because it’s true.”

She smiled.

I continued.

“I joined the Army to spite Dad.”

“Also believable.”

“I stayed because I was good at it.”

“Very you.”

Then June asked:

“Were you happy?”

As Evelyn?

Sometimes.

Ranger.

Training.

My team.

Mornings before family calls.

“Yes.”

“Were you happy here?”

“Yes.”

“Then stop acting like one cancels the other.”

I looked down.

“I lied to you.”

“You withheld a federal conspiracy.”

“Still.”

“You lied every time I asked about family.”

“Yes.”

“That hurt.”

“I know.”

“I’m still angry.”

“I know.”

Then June reached across the table.

“Good.”

“What?”

“If you know, I don’t have to make you miserable until you admit it.”

That was friendship.

May you like

Not instant forgiveness.

Truth plus room.
