Chapter 17 - Ranger’s Medical File

The strangest evidence came from a veterinary archive.

Ranger had experienced a tracking-unit malfunction years earlier.

Nothing catastrophic.

Device failed during training.

The unit was removed and logged.

Its serial number belonged to lot 9174.

The maintenance report noted:

Handler reported intermittent loss of signal; unit removed from service.

Handler:

Evelyn Hart.

My legitimate signature.

That report predated the forged certification saying lot 9174 passed all field requirements.

There it was.

A contemporaneous government record.

The dog’s medical-equipment file contradicted the fraud.

Ranger was not a witness in a legal sense.

He could not testify.

But his record could.

The reason Sloane feared Ranger’s archives became obvious.

My real signature and later forged signature sat in neighboring systems.

Noah laughed when investigators explained.

“Ranger solved accounting.”

I smiled.

“No.”

Then looked at the dog.

“He broke a tie.”

Still, appropriate.

The case would never depend on an animal remembering my hand signal.

That was only how the hidden person resurfaced.

Evidence remained human.

Documents.

Money.

Choices.
