Chapter 27 - Ranger Comes to Breakfast

Noah lived ninety minutes away.
Every few weeks he brought Ranger to the diner.
Ranger no longer worked.
But habits survived.
He checked doors.
Watched people.
Ignored carrots.
Customers eventually stopped being excited.
He became just Ranger.
That was healing too.
One morning a little girl asked:
“Was he your dog?”
I answered:
“Once.”
Noah said:
“He still thinks she’s management.”
Ranger stared at me.
I placed a piece of approved treat in Noah’s hand, not Ranger’s.
Handler rules still mattered.
Noah laughed.
“You haven’t changed.”
May you like
“I changed everything.”
“Fair.”
