Chapter 26 - June Makes Me Tell the Staff

When the federal restrictions eased enough, June gathered the diner staff.
“All right,” she said. “Hannah has a weird past. Nobody sells interviews.”
One dishwasher raised his hand.
“Can we ask questions?”
“No.”
I laughed.
“Some.”
They wanted to know if I had killed people.
“No.”
If I was a spy.
“No.”
If Ranger could smell fear.
“Probably bacon.”
If Hannah was my real name.
“Yes.”
Then sixteen-year-old waitress Macy asked:
“Was Evelyn real?”
That stopped me.
“Yes.”
“Then why did you bury her?”
I thought.
“Because at the time, people could find her.”
Macy nodded.
“Do you miss her?”
Sometimes.
But that answer changed.
“I think I’m done treating her like she died.”
June smiled.
