Chapter 28 - Marcus Comes Home

After serving his sentence and completing initial release conditions, Marcus returned to Nashville.
No Hartwell office.
No board seat.
No private jet.
He lived in a condo.
Worked eventually as an adviser to a small manufacturing turnaround firm under restrictions.
We met at the diner after closing.
June stayed in the kitchen “not listening.”
Marcus looked around.
“So this is Hannah.”
“This is home.”
He nodded.
“I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
“No, I mean—”
“I know what you mean.”
He looked frustrated.
“I had a whole speech.”
“Keep it.”
We sat.
He asked about Ranger.
I showed him a photo.
He smiled.
“Dad liked that dog.”
“Dad was scared of him.”
“Also true.”
We talked about Thomas.
Not fraud.
Not trust.
Our father.
For the first time in twenty years.
Forgiveness did not arrive.
Relationship did.
May you like
Slowly.
Different.
