Chapter 13 - Sloane Calls Me

Nathan Sloane called through his lawyer.

Not directly.

He wanted a proffer.

Federal prosecutors arranged it.

I was not present.

Good.

My involvement as victim/witness did not entitle me to negotiate charges.

Later, investigators summarized what he claimed.

Sloane denied ordering surveillance to threaten me.

He admitted hiring Calvin Price to locate me.

Purpose:

Determine whether I possessed Thomas Hart’s notebook or Ranger-related records.

Why?

Because Sloane feared documents would misrepresent legitimate investments.

That was his language.

He admitted a financial interest in early Kestrel entities through a family trust.

He denied bribery.

Claimed consulting.

He admitted pressuring Mara to “clarify uncertainty.”

Denied threatening her daughter.

Mara had photographs.

Someone had sent them.

Attribution remained under investigation.

He admitted directing record “cleanup.”

Called it compliance remediation.

I laughed when Laura read that phrase.

Everything bad eventually acquires a professional noun.

Then prosecutors confronted him with my father’s notebook.

Private participation.

12.5%.

His explanation changed.

That mattered.
