Chapter 9 - Locker 214Inside Locker 214 Daniel found no money.

No weapon.
No dramatic confession.
Only documents.
A cassette tape.
A childhood diary.
And a letter addressed to him.
He sat inside his truck and opened it.
Danny,
If you are reading this, something has happened that finally forced you to question the story they told you.
Daniel’s hands trembled.
I did not die.
Dad sent me away after I refused to keep quiet about what happened at the farm. Before that, he kept me hidden whenever people visited because I had threatened to tell Grandma Miriam what he was doing with her money.
Daniel stopped.
Anna had been ten.
She had known about financial theft even then.
He continued.
The barn was where Dad punished me for asking questions. Mom knew more than she admits. Robert knew everything.
Grandma discovered part of it and created the agreement you found. She believed the farm needed protection from Dad and Robert.
There is another document.
Robert has spent twenty years trying to find it.
Daniel read the final line twice.
And if Claire has started using that barn against Ethan, then Robert has taught another generation how to keep children silent.
Daniel drove home.
He found Ethan eating cereal in the kitchen.
For several seconds Daniel simply looked at his son.
Then he knelt and hugged him.
Ethan looked confused.
“What happened?”
Daniel swallowed.
“Something I should have understood sooner.”
That afternoon Daniel listened to the cassette.
A woman’s voice spoke.
His grandmother Miriam.
The recording was dated November 2003.
“If Walter or Robert attempts to control Carter Ridge contrary to this agreement, ownership shall remain protected for the children.”
Then another voice.
Anna’s.
Young.
Frightened.
“I saw Uncle Robert taking papers from your desk.”
Daniel froze.
Miriam continued.
“And what did your father say?”
“He said I imagined it.”
The tape clicked.

Then Anna said something Daniel would never forget.
“Grandma, if I disappear, don’t believe I ran away.”
