Chapter 25 - Helen Finally Speaks PubliclyRobert’s attorneys attacked Miriam’s covenant.

They claimed Anna had voluntarily left the farm.
That argument depended heavily on Helen.
For decades Helen had repeated the story Robert wanted.
This time she walked into a sworn deposition and changed everything.
“No,” she said.
“Anna did not leave willingly.”
Robert’s attorney stopped.
Helen continued.
“My husband arranged her removal.”
“Mrs. Carter, are you aware that contradicts statements you previously made?”
“Yes.”
“Were those statements false?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Fear.”
Robert, seated across the room, stared at her.
Helen looked directly at him.
“And because Robert Carter threatened my family.”
His attorney objected.
Helen kept speaking.
She described Walter’s financial schemes.
Anna’s confinement.
The arguments with Miriam.
Robert’s pressure after Walter’s death.
The false story about Anna dying.
Twenty-three years of silence collapsed in three hours.
When Helen emerged, Daniel was waiting.
She looked older than she had that morning.
“I don’t expect forgiveness.”
Daniel nodded.
“I’m not ready to give it.”
“I understand.”
“But you finally told the truth.”
Helen began crying.
Daniel did not hug her.
Not yet.
Some relationships did not heal because one person finally did what they should have done decades earlier.

But truth created the possibility.
That was more than they had possessed before.
