Chapter 24 - Anna’s DecisionLegally, Anna had enormous leverage.

Melissa confirmed the covenant was likely enforceable.
Carter Ridge belonged primarily to her trust interest.
Daniel’s ownership documents were defective.
The business itself belonged to Daniel.
The land beneath it did not.
The distinction could bankrupt him.
Daniel asked Anna to choose whatever she believed was fair.
“No pressure.”
“You invested everything here.”
“It was your land.”
“You didn’t know.”
“That doesn’t make it mine.”
Anna walked through the farm alone that evening.
The place represented terrible memories.
But also Miriam.
Daniel.
The years stolen from her.
At sunset she found Ethan sitting beside the fence.
“Do you hate the barn?” he asked.
Anna sat nearby.
“Sometimes.”
“Me too.”
They watched the cows moving across the pasture.
Ethan whispered:
“Dad says we can tear the bad room down.”
Anna looked toward the red building.
“No.”
Ethan seemed surprised.
“You don’t want to?”
“I think we should change it.”
“Into what?”
Anna smiled.
“Something nobody has to be afraid of.”
The following morning she met Daniel and Melissa.
“I’ll place the land into a new family trust.”
Daniel stared.
“Anna—”
“Equal stewardship. You and me.”
“What about Ethan?”
“He becomes beneficiary after us.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You don’t owe us that.”
“I’m not doing it because I owe you.”
She looked through the window toward Ethan.
“I’m doing it because Robert spent his whole life treating ownership as power over people.”
May you like
Anna slid the document toward Melissa.
“I want ownership to mean responsibility instead.”
