Chapter 17 - Walter’s Final NightHelen’s account changed Daniel’s understanding of everything.

Walter had not simply slipped from the grain platform.
That night he and Robert had been arguing.
Walter wanted to confess part of the old financial scheme.
Robert refused.
Helen heard shouting.
Then Walter fell.
“I didn’t see Robert push him,” Helen said.
“But you think he did?”
“I don’t know.”
“Why didn’t you tell police?”
“Robert said they would investigate all of us. The farm. Anna. Everything.”
Daniel stared at her.
“So you lied.”
“I was terrified.”
“For twenty-three years?”
Helen cried harder.
Daniel felt anger, but also exhaustion.
Every secret contained another secret.
Every lie had been justified as protection.
Protect the family.
Protect the farm.
Protect Daniel.
Protect Helen.
Yet the only people consistently unprotected had been children.
Anna.
Michael.
Now Ethan.
Daniel stood.
“I’m done protecting secrets.”
Helen looked up.
“If Robert thinks you have the original covenant, he won’t stop.”
“Then he should be worried.”
Before leaving, Daniel asked one final question.
“Did Claire know my family before she met me?”
Helen’s eyes dropped.
Daniel’s chest tightened.
“Mom.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“She worked at Robert’s bank.”
Daniel stared at her.
“For how long?”
“Three years.”
“And you never told me?”
“Robert said it didn’t matter.”
Daniel laughed without humor.
Claire had not merely researched Rachel.
May you like
She had known Robert long before marrying Daniel.
Their entire relationship had been built inside a plan Daniel had never seen.
