Chapter 19 - Rachel’s Treasure GameDaniel remembered immediately.

Rachel loved treasure hunts.
Every birthday she hid Ethan’s presents behind picture clues.
Ethan had only been three when she died, but Rachel had prepared things for future birthdays.
Letters.
Videos.
Small gifts.
Daniel had stored them in a cedar chest.
He carried the chest downstairs.
Ethan sat beside him.
“Mommy’s box?”
“Yes.”
Daniel opened it.
Several envelopes were labeled by age.
Ethan — 5.
Ethan — 7.
Daniel stopped.
Ethan was seven now.
They opened that envelope together.
Inside was a birthday letter from Rachel.
Daniel read only the beginning aloud.
The rest was ordinary.
Stories about Ethan as a baby.
How much she loved him.
Then near the bottom:
Your treasure is where Grandma Miriam always said the farm remembers every generation. Dad will understand when the time is right.
Daniel didn’t understand.
Anna did.
“The old milk bell.”
They ran toward the barn.
Above the south entrance hung a brass bell installed by Miriam decades earlier.
Inside its wooden mounting Daniel found a waterproof tube.
Within it lay a USB drive.
Rachel had hidden it years earlier.
Daniel opened the files on an offline laptop.
Scanned documents appeared.
Bank transfers.
Photographs.
Copies of Miriam’s covenant.
Emails involving Robert.
Then a video.
Rachel appeared onscreen.
Daniel nearly stopped breathing.
She looked younger.
Alive.
“If Daniel is seeing this,” Rachel said, “then something has probably gone wrong.”
Daniel gripped the table.
Rachel explained that while organizing old business records she discovered Robert’s attempts to invalidate Miriam’s trust.
She also discovered Robert had begun contacting developers.
“I’m hiding copies because Daniel’s father told me to stop asking questions.”
Then Rachel looked directly into the camera.
“The farm doesn’t belong to Walter.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“It doesn’t belong to Robert.”
Pause.
“Under Miriam’s final covenant, it belongs to Anna.”
Anna stood behind Daniel crying silently.
Rachel continued.
“And if Anna cannot be located, Daniel holds it only in stewardship until she is found.”
Daniel finally understood.
His father had knowingly lied to him.
Every mortgage.
Every expansion.
Every building.
Daniel had invested millions into property he legally managed but did not own.

The final portion of Rachel’s video was worse.
“Robert knows Anna is alive.”
