Chapter 28 - Rebuilding the BarnSpring arrived.

Daniel considered demolishing the north barn.

Anna stopped him.

Instead they renovated it.

The hidden storage room was opened completely.

The wooden partition came down.

Sunlight reached the space for the first time in decades.

Ethan watched workers remove old boards.

“What will it be?”

Daniel looked at Anna.

She answered.

“A community room.”

They created a small educational center for children visiting Carter Ridge.

Books.

Farm exhibits.

A large window overlooking newborn calves.

One wall remained untouched.

The wall containing the initials.

A.C.

Daniel asked Anna whether she wanted them removed.

“No.”

Beside them were newer marks.

Ethan’s pencil line.

Anna added a small brass plaque beneath them.

Silence protects the wrong people.

Daniel read it.

“That’s heavy for a farm tour.”

Anna smiled.

“Good.”

Michael visited on opening day.

Helen came too.

She remained near the doorway until Anna approached her.

For a long moment mother and daughter looked at each other.

Helen whispered:

“I’m sorry.”

Anna nodded.

“I know.”

“Can you forgive me?”

“Not today.”

Helen’s eyes filled.

“But maybe someday,” Anna added.

Healing was not the same as pretending the past had never happened.

It meant refusing to let the past dictate every future day.
