Chapter 13 - The Barn IncidentAnna finally told Daniel what happened twenty-three years earlier.

Their father, Walter, had been managing Carter Ridge for Miriam.
The farm was profitable.
But Walter and Robert were secretly borrowing against equipment and moving money into private investments.
Anna discovered invoices hidden beneath a desk.
She was ten.
She didn’t understand everything.
But she understood enough to ask Miriam why cows had supposedly been sold when they were still standing in the pasture.
Miriam became suspicious.
Walter panicked.
“Dad told everyone I was making things up,” Anna said.
They sat near the creek beyond the farm.
“Then he started keeping me away from Grandma.”
Daniel remembered pieces now.
Anna missing meals.
Doors closing.
Arguments ending when he entered rooms.
“What happened in the barn?”
“I had hidden copies of invoices there.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Dad found them?”
“Robert did.”
Anna’s voice became quieter.
“They locked me in the storage space while they searched for everything I’d copied.”
Daniel shut his eyes.
“I remember hearing you.”
Anna looked at him.
“You came to the wall.”
Daniel suddenly saw it.
His eight-year-old hand pressed against a wooden panel.
Anna whispering from the other side.
Danny, get Grandma.
“I told Dad.”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked horrified.
“I thought I was helping.”
“You were eight.”
“What happened after?”
“They sent me away.”
“And Mom?”
“She knew.”
The words hurt more than Daniel expected.
“Why?”
“Because Dad threatened to leave her with nothing. She was terrified.”
“That doesn’t excuse it.”
“No.”
Anna looked toward the farmhouse.
“Fear explains people. It doesn’t absolve them.”
Daniel asked about the trust.
Anna explained that Miriam created the Carter Family Agreement after discovering the fraud.
She also prepared a second document—the Supplemental Child Protection Covenant.
“What did it do?”
“It transferred Carter Ridge into a protected trust.”
“For whom?”
Anna looked at him.
“For us.”
Daniel waited.
“But there was a condition.”
“What?”
“If either Walter or Robert concealed, threatened, or removed a beneficiary to gain control, their authority over the property ended permanently.”
Daniel understood.
“Dad sent you away.”
“Yes.”
“So the covenant was triggered.”
“Yes.”
“Who owns the farm?”
Anna’s expression became complicated.
“That depends on whether Grandma filed the final version.”
“Did she?”
“I believe she did.”
“And if she did?”

Anna looked at him.
“You don’t own Carter Ridge, Daniel.”
