Every barn camera simultaneously.
Daniel woke immediately.
He grabbed his phone and went downstairs.
Anna was already in the hallway.
“You heard it?”
“The generator stopped.”
They moved toward Ethan’s room.
Empty.
Daniel’s heart slammed.
“Ethan!”
A sound came from downstairs.
Ethan stood near the kitchen carrying his blanket.
“I’m here.”
Daniel lifted him immediately.
“Why did you leave your room?”
“I heard something outside.”
Anna looked through the window.
A vehicle was moving beyond the equipment shed.
Daniel called the sheriff.
By the time deputies arrived, the vehicle was gone.
The barn door stood open.
Inside, boxes had been overturned.
Someone had searched the hidden room.
The metal container containing Miriam’s covenant was missing.
But Daniel smiled when he saw the empty brick cavity.
“What?” Anna asked.
“I moved everything yesterday.”
The originals were inside Melissa’s law-office safe.
Whoever entered the barn had stolen worthless copies.
Deputies found tire marks near the eastern road.
They also found a broken cuff link.
Silver.
Stamped with initials.
R.C.
Robert denied being there.
He claimed someone could have planted it.
Then investigators discovered something more useful.
The farmhouse camera had captured a face before the system died.
