Chapter 7 - The Timeline

James eventually summoned Emily back to the house and asked for one thing: the timeline. No poetry, no soft language, no talk of confusion. Dates. She told him the first kiss happened while his mother was ill, the affair became regular by December, and the night of December 18—when James had slept in the hospital with Evelyn—she had gone to Ryan.

That detail nearly dropped him out of his chair. He wrote the date down because he needed the wound fixed in ink rather than vapor. Emily also admitted there had been repeated attempts to end the affair, each followed by reopening. She acknowledged hotel rooms, lies, fake charity meetings, and weekends warped by deceit.

James asked the one question that mattered most to him emotionally: did they laugh at him together? Emily said no, and he believed her. The betrayal had not usually been theatrical. It had been practical, which somehow felt worse.

Then he asked about company money. Emily admitted Ryan had once or twice expensed dinners and a hotel connected to the affair. That answer turned his grief toward another axis altogether: the marriage had not been the only structure Ryan might have contaminated.

When Emily finally left that night, James was no closer to forgiveness. But he had something sharper than raw outrage now. He had sequence. And sequence, for a man like him, became the first tool with which to fight back against emotional chaos.
