Chapter 25 - Emily Without an Audience

Emily gradually stopped orienting her life around whether James might forgive her. She moved into a rental townhouse, increased her independent work, and entered individual therapy. There she admitted the affair had given her intensity, attention, and a chosen self at the cost of integrity and self-respect.

One of the hardest griefs turned out to be domestic muscle memory. Seeing James’s favorite coffee in a store nearly made her buy it automatically, and she cried in the parking lot when she realized how many small gestures of care remained in her body after the marriage had ended.

When James met her at a café to explain the buyout terms for the house, they spoke with an adult civility that contained no false promise. He returned personal items from the storage unit. She destroyed some of them later—especially anything that had functioned as a token of Ryan’s secret claim.

James told her he did not hate her all the time anymore, but he hated what she chose and what it did. Emily accepted that. She also accepted that civility was not reconciliation. Growing up morally, she was learning, sometimes meant letting another person remain kind without trying to reclaim the rights kindness once implied.
