Chapter 12 - Walter’s Rule

James returned to Walter, who offered the rule that would anchor him: don’t let the person who betrayed you appoint your next character. Walter meant James could not become reckless, cruel, or consumed by vengeance simply because others had been. Handling business firmly was different from letting betrayal redesign the man he wanted to be.

Walter also pointed out a pattern James disliked hearing. After Evelyn’s death, James had confused competence with grief. Now he was in danger of confusing strategy with healing. Lawyers and accountants were necessary. They were not the same as mourning.

The conversation led James to write down two principles: discipline is not the same as healing; late truth matters, but it is not innocence. Emily’s honesty now was worth something, Walter said, yet timing still carried moral weight.

That night James received a cryptic message from Ryan: ask about Charleston. The text angered him, but it also clarified Ryan’s style. Even when cornered, he still tried to control revelation. James wrote “Charleston” in his notebook. The war had broadened again.
