Chapter 24 - At Evelyn’s Grave Again

On his mother’s birthday James returned to the cemetery and spoke more plainly than before. He admitted he was still searching for the point at which he could have prevented everything. He carried the fragment of the wedding photo in his coat pocket and acknowledged that the marriage had been real and then had not been enough.

Walter later joined him with pound cake and told him something Evelyn used to say: not everything is about your power. The sentence undid a knot in James. Self-blame had preserved the illusion that he could have controlled all outcomes if only he had loved differently, worked differently, or seen more. Letting go of that illusion was not abdication. It was reality.

Emily texted quietly to honor Evelyn and not to make the day about the marriage. James thanked her for that. Even such small disciplined kindnesses mattered now.

He left the cemetery feeling not healed but less burdened by false responsibility. Some choices had never belonged to him. His task was to live forward, not to carry omnipotence as punishment.
