Chapter 27 - The Mediation Table

At divorce mediation, most property issues were already nearly resolved. What remained was emotional framing disguised as legal language. James wanted finality: no late confessions, no private attempts to revisit the marriage, no hidden remnants. Emily wanted one thing: that the marriage not be rewritten as fake from the beginning.

James surprised both of them by agreeing that it had not all been false. But he also said the affair changed the meaning of everything that followed its beginning, including memories he used to trust. Emily accepted that.

They agreed not to lie publicly for each other, not to weaponize older wounds like the miscarriage as retroactive justification, and not to turn truth into spectacle. James also requested no anniversary contact—not on their wedding date and not on the date the marriage exploded. Emily agreed.

Outside in the rain, after the papers were signed, James described himself not as free yet, but released. The distinction felt exact. The legal bond was ending. The emotional residue would take longer. Still, dust eventually thins, he thought, if no one keeps shaking the furniture.
