Chapter 16 - Unit 314

The storage unit turned out to be exactly what Ryan would build: part archive, part shrine, part contingency plan. Inside were bins of photos, ticket stubs, scarves, cards, printed messages, and an entire hidden history curated for later use or self-worship.

More important were the banker’s boxes. They contained invoices, shell-company paperwork, and notes that tied Turner Strategic Interiors directly to questionable payments. There was also a legal envelope addressed “If James Finds Out,” containing Ryan’s prewritten attempt to frame the affair as evidence that James’s marriage had already died and to suggest any business review would be retaliatory.

Worst of all were thumb drives and audio files. Ryan had secretly recorded conversations with Emily, preserving leverage against unpredictability. James no longer had to ask whether Ryan loved control. Control was cataloged in plastic bins.

One notebook entry struck James hard: Ryan wrote that James still “worships image of marriage” and that discovery might force him to stop pretending. The cruelty was obvious. So was the uncomfortable truth that image and reality had indeed diverged.

Leaving the unit, James understood something decisive. The affair’s meaning no longer interested him nearly as much as character did. Whatever feeling had existed, Ryan had still chosen to treat intimacy like inventory and human weakness like collateral.
