Chapter 21 - The Boardroom

The board meeting formalized Ryan’s collapse. Nadia presented the findings: questionable reimbursements, shell-company invoices, missing deliverables, and evidence of concealment. Ryan, appearing by video with counsel, tried to frame everything as flexible growth strategy.

Then James disclosed the personal conflict—the affair with Emily—not as the basis for the evidence, but as the reason heightened scrutiny began. The board reacted with chilled disgust. Whatever sympathy Ryan might have hoped for evaporated. Character, once exposed, reshaped how every invoice was read.

The board voted to remove Ryan from all operational authority and continue the independent review. Civil recovery and possible outside referral remained on the table.

Later Emily sent James a short note saying she was sorry Ryan had touched his work the way he touched their life. The phrasing was not elegant, but it was accurate. James began to understand that contamination—not merely wrongdoing—was the right word. Ryan had entered systems of trust and treated them as personal terrain.

The company would survive, but not unchanged. Neither would James.
