Chapter 6 - Robert Gray

Samuel Price had died.
His investigative firm archives remained with daughter, Laura Price.
She allowed review after legal authorization from Elaine’s estate.
The 2014 investigation was thorough.
Robert lived near Santa Fe under name Robert Gray—his mother’s maiden name.
Worked as maintenance supervisor for small retreat center.
Paid taxes under legal? If alias, perhaps obtained identity through middle name? Better: Robert James Grant legally changed name to Robert James Gray in New Mexico in 2007? Public record. Let's make legal name change.
No crime in changing name.
Robert legally became Robert Gray in 2007.
That meant he had taken active steps to remain hidden.
Michael felt betrayed.
Sarah looked devastated.
Then Laura showed them something mother never saw.
A sealed continuation file received after Elaine stopped investigation.
Robert had contacted Samuel Price in 2016.
He knew he had been found.
He sent letter.
Please tell Elaine I am sorry. Do not give children my location. Vale still has people monitoring St. Matthew’s property fight. I have evidence that will matter when land changes hands again.
Michael laughed bitterly.
“Still protecting us.”
Sarah said:
“Or hiding.”
Both could be true.
Laura said Robert died in 2019.
Michael froze.
“How?”
“Cancer.”
Two years before Elaine.
Sarah closed eyes.
They had missed him forever.
Again.
Laura handed them death certificate.
Robert James Gray.
Age seventy.
New Mexico.
Informant:
Maria Alvarez.
Relationship:
Friend.
No child listed.
“What about little girl?”
“Maria’s granddaughter.”
Not Robert’s child.
Another assumption gone.
Michael sat.
All anger lost direction.
Their father survived fifteen years after disappearance.
Chose not to return.
Even after Vale? Vale died six months ago, after Robert. So threat still alive throughout.
But why not contact adult children privately?
Thomas asked same.
Laura had answer.
Another letter, unsent.
Robert wrote it in 2018.
Michael and Sarah are adults now. That should make return easier. It does not. Every year I stayed away made next year harder. At first I was protecting them. Later I was ashamed. Eventually I did not know whether appearing would heal anything or simply demand they forgive my cowardice.
Michael stared.
Sarah whispered:
“He knew.”
Thomas looked away.
Robert continued:
I kept waiting for a clean moment to return. There are no clean moments after enough time.
Michael thought of Thomas waiting twenty-two years.
Peter.
Gerald.
Everyone postponing confession until it became identity.
The letter ended:
If they ever find this, tell them I loved them. Do not tell them that means I did right.
Michael folded paper.
No absolution.
Good.
Maria Alvarez agreed to speak by phone.
She met Robert in 2006.
“He was kind,” she said.
“Was he happy?” Sarah asked.
“Sometimes.”
“Did he talk about us?”
“Every week.”
Michael closed eyes.
Maria said Robert kept boxes for each child.
Photographs.
Birthday cards never mailed.
Newspaper clippings.
“He watched your lives from far away.”
That hurt worse than ignorance.
“Why not send cards?” Michael asked.
“He was afraid one would lead Vale to him.”
“Twenty years?”
Maria paused.
“No.”
Honest.
“Later he was afraid of you.”
“Me?”
“Of your anger.”
Michael looked at bruised knuckles from churchyard shove.
Fair.
Maria continued:
“He knew he had become man who abandoned family even if that wasn’t how it started.”
Sarah cried.
“Did he ever say what happened to money?”
“Yes.”
They both froze.
“What?”
“Your father said Vale never kept all missing funds.”
“Who did?”
“Some went into land.”
“What land?”
“St. Matthew’s cemetery expansion.”
Thomas looked up.
The church had purchased twenty acres in 2008.
At inflated price.
Seller?
Michael searched records.
A company formed by Gerald Wynn.
The scheme continued after Robert disappeared.
And Thomas, by then pastor, had approved purchase.
Michael turned toward him.
“You signed again.”
Thomas went pale.
“Yes.”
The priest had not merely failed once.

Even after Robert vanished, he continued trusting structures connected to Vale.
Now his responsibility was deeper.
