Chapter 12 - Robert’s Boxes

Maria shipped Robert’s boxes from New Mexico.
Two for Michael.
Two for Sarah.
One for Elaine, unopened.
Sarah did not want hers immediately.
Michael did.
Inside:
Baseball glove.
School report cards.
Newspaper clipping of Michael graduating college.
Printout of architecture? Michael's career unspecified. Let's decide Michael owns small contracting/engineering? He is a commercial insurance adjuster? Need not much. Let's make Michael is civil engineer. Robert followed his engineering career.
Article about Michael becoming project manager for bridge firm.
Wedding invitation? Michael maybe divorced? Not established. Let's keep unmarried. No need.
Birthday cards.
Twenty of them.
Never mailed.
Michael opened first.
Age eighteen.
I hope anger makes you move, not harden.
Age twenty-one.
I saw your university graduation photograph. I stood across street. I am sorry.
Michael froze.
Robert had been there.
Not contact.
Watching.
He felt furious.
He called Maria.
“Did he go to graduation?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t he speak?”
“He almost did.”
“Almost is nothing.”
“I know.”
Maria did not defend.
Robert’s cowardice became more painful because opportunities were real.
Age thirty card:
I saw you outside your office once. You looked like me when I was young. I left before you saw me because I realized I wanted forgiveness before I had offered truth.
Michael threw card across room.
Then picked it up.
Sarah eventually opened hers.
Her boxes contained dance recital ribbon.
Wedding newspaper announcement.
Photographs of her children printed from public social media? Could be creepy. Better news/photos sent by Elaine secretly? Did Elaine correspond? Wait Elaine knew location? Investigator in 2014, no direct contact. Maybe Robert got public family Christmas newsletters through Gerald? Let's avoid creepy. He collected public announcements and copies Maria printed from a private? no.
A 2016 card:
I heard you named daughter Elaine. I hope your mother knows I did not deserve the loyalty she gave memory of me.
Sarah cried.
Robert knew through Gerald perhaps. That means Gerald kept contact? Gerald had claimed one call only. Another lie.
They confronted Gerald.
He admitted receiving occasional mail drops from Robert for years.
Not direct calls.
He forwarded public family updates.
“Why didn’t you deliver cards?”
“Robert forbade.”
“You could have ignored him.”
“Yes.”
Gerald looked exhausted.
“I kept obeying absent man because it kept me from confronting living people.”
Sarah left.
No more questions.
She had enough.
Michael realized investigations could become infinite.
Every answer created moral alternative.
At some point truth complete enough.
Then Elaine’s box.
Addressed to their mother.
She was dead.
Who should open?
Legally estate executor: Michael and Sarah jointly.
Emotionally uncertain.
Sarah said:
“Maybe not.”
Michael wanted desperately.
They waited one week.
Then agreed together.
Inside dozens of letters to Elaine.
Robert never sent.
Most apologized.
Some angry.
Some loving.
One from 2014 after learning Elaine hired investigator.
You found me. I hoped you would. I feared you would. I do not know which feeling is more selfish.
Another:
If you tell children where I am, I will not blame you.
But Gerald had told Elaine Robert asked not to.
Contradiction.
Had Elaine chosen silence too?
There was no proof she saw this letter. It remained unsent in box.
Good.
Do not invent.
Final letter written weeks before Robert died:
I do not expect forgiveness. I have spent years telling myself return would reopen wounds. Truth: I was afraid wounds would reveal I was no longer needed.
Michael understood.
Robert wanted to remain tragic missing father rather than flawed living one.
Image.
Pride.
Fear.
He had protected myth.
Same as Thomas protecting parish reputation.
Different form.
Michael closed box.
“I’m done.”
Sarah looked at him.
“With what?”
“Looking for another reason.”
There would always be more context.
The core was enough.
Their father was threatened.
He made an agreement.
He left to protect family and himself.
After threat period ended, he stayed because shame and fear.
He loved them.
He abandoned them.
Both.
No final twist needed.
But financial case still had one unresolved asset.
Vale Development had resold St. Matthew’s land for enormous profit.
Could parish recover anything?
Legally uncertain.
Morally contested.
Caroline Vale proposed voluntary restitution from estate.
$1.8 million.
Parish council would vote.
And Michael, whose father exposed scheme, was asked to address them.
He almost refused.
Then decided to speak.
May you like
Not about punishment.
About what money should repair.
