Chapter 16 - Peter’s Last Secret

Peter called Michael six months later.

“One more thing.”

Michael almost hung up.

Then laughed.

“Of course.”

Peter had a document belonging to Robert.

A deed.

Not church.

A small lakeside parcel Robert and Peter bought jointly before disappearance.

Peter transferred full title to himself after Robert was declared missing.

Later sold for $600,000.

Robert’s estate should have received half.

Michael stared.

“You stole from us too.”

Peter nodded.

“Yes.”

“How much remains?”

“About two hundred thousand.”

“Why tell now?”

“Because I’m tired.”

Michael hated that truth arrived when liars became tired.

Still.

Peter proposed repay estate with interest from remaining assets.

Michael and Sarah consulted attorney.

Accepted formal settlement.

No private handshake.

Money divided according Elaine’s estate plan.

Sarah used part for children education.

Michael invested part.

Neither donated it to prove moral purity.

Peter’s confession reduced what little remained of his wealth.

Consequences.

He moved smaller apartment.

Still lived.

Still family in limited way.

Michael visited on Thanksgiving for one hour.

Not obligation.

Choice.
