Chapter 15 - Thomas’s Decision

The diocese allowed Thomas to return to ministry under conditions but barred him permanently from financial administration and required public acknowledgment of misconduct.

He surprised everyone.

He declined return as pastor of St. Matthew’s.

Michael asked why.

“I no longer think I should hold same authority here.”

“Running?”

“Maybe.”

Thomas accepted assignment as chaplain at hospital under supervision.

Less institutional power.

More direct pastoral care.

Some parishioners called it punishment.

Thomas did not.

“I chose it.”

Michael respected that.

Before leaving, Thomas gave St. Matthew’s final homily.

Michael did not attend.

Sarah did.

Thomas said nothing about being victim of Michael’s shove.

No self-martyrdom.

He spoke about confession without spectacle, restitution without self-praise, and how institutions can mistake silence for peace.

Sarah later summarized.

Michael said:

“Sounds convenient.”

Sarah smiled.

“Also true.”

He nodded.

Thomas moved.

Their relationship became occasional letters.

Not friendship.

May you like

Not enemies.

Good.
