Chapter 18 - The Date on the Envelope

Michael revisited original envelope.
Postmark absent.
Wax.
Robert had written but who placed in Elaine’s safe-deposit box?
Bank logs showed deposit made 2005.
By Peter.
Michael confronted.
Peter admitted Robert mailed envelope to him from Arizona with instructions to put in Elaine’s box only if Vale died or Peter confessed.
Peter did neither.
He still placed it there secretly.
“Why?”
“Because I wanted truth available someday without having to deliver it.”
Michael laughed.
Cowardice with contingency plan.
Peter nodded.
“Yes.”
But this meant Robert trusted Peter even after betrayal enough to route letter.
Why?
Peter said:
“He told me I was weak, not evil.”
Michael hated phrase.
Peter cried.
“I spent twenty years proving him half right.”
Michael had no answer.
