Chapter 22 - New Mexico

Michael and Sarah flew west.
Maria met them.
She was sixty-eight.
Warm.
Careful.
Robert’s grave simple.
No heroic epitaph.
ROBERT JAMES GRAY
1949–2019
Michael stared.
“Wrong name.”
Sarah said:
“Both were his.”
They placed no flowers initially.
Just stood.
Michael said aloud:
“You should have come home.”
Wind.
Nothing.
Good.
Sarah said:
“I loved you.”
Michael added:
“I’m angry.”
Both true.
Maria gave them one final object.
Robert’s Bible.
Inside photograph of Elaine.
On back:
The life I left trying to protect.
Michael almost laughed.
“Dramatic.”
Sarah smiled through tears.
