Chapter 9 - The Mountain Road
New traffic-camera review found Sophia’s car entered mountain road at 2:14 a.m.
A second vehicle followed.
Black SUV.
Plate obscured.
At 2:32, only SUV returned.
Sophia’s car was found at 7:20.
No one knew whether Sophia was inside when it left road.
Search had assumed yes.
But no body.
New forensic team found rear passenger door showed signs of opening after main damage.
Maybe someone removed items or a person.
Marcus asked:
“Could she have gotten out?”
“Yes.”
Hope terrified him.
He had built survival around not knowing.
Too much hope could destroy again.
Chen remained careful.
“No evidence she's alive.”
“Then don't say it like possibility is likely.”
“Fair.”
Marcus appreciated correction.
Then they found shoe print photos from original scene.
A female-sized print led away from car toward service trail.
Ignored because searchers assumed responder contamination.
It predated responders based weather? Hard to establish. But maybe.
Trail led to old fire lookout.
Search records showed lookout checked once.
Empty.
But Sophia may have passed.
