Chapter 15 - The Woman Called Elena Ward

Federal investigators found hospital record from small New Mexico clinic two days after disappearance.

Patient name:

Elena Ward.

Approximate age Sophia’s.

Treated for dehydration and minor injuries after being found near highway by trucker.

No ID.

Patient left before police interview with woman claiming sister.

Security image grainy.

Marcus recognized Sophia instantly.

Alive two days later.

The woman with her:

Lena Ortiz.

Marcus stared.

He turned toward Lena during confrontation.

“You knew.”

Lena cried.

“Yes.”

Everything shattered again.

Why hide?

Lena said Sophia begged.

She believed Daniel and Owen controlled local search.

She drove Sophia out of state.

Then contacted federal agent Carter through attorney.

Sophia entered protective cooperation under temporary identity while authorities investigated Horizon.

Why three years?

The investigation became compromised.

A leak exposed Carter meeting location.

Sophia was moved again.

Then Carter suffered stroke and retired; case transferred under sealed source code. Bureau bureaucracy kept identity compartmentalized.

Is this fully plausible? Fiction, okay.

Lena had been forbidden to contact Marcus.

Sophia wanted to.

At first agents believed Marcus might be compromised because Daniel had planted financial evidence.

Later when cleared internally, contacting Marcus still risked exposure because Victor’s security monitored him.

Sophia made choice to remain hidden until indictments.

Marcus was furious.

“At me too?”

Lena nodded.

“She knew you would come looking.”

“Of course!”

“That was problem.”

Marcus walked away.

Love had been used to exclude him.

Different from Victor’s accusation, but still pain.

Then Chen said:

“Marcus.”

He turned.

May you like

“There’s someone you need to meet.”
