Chapter 4 - Lena’s Email

Lena Ortiz had sent the email at 12:26 a.m. the night Sophia disappeared.
To Owen Mercer.
Subject:
Sophia Crane at Red Mesa — Urgent
She wrote that Sophia arrived distressed.
Asked access to old records room.
Left shortly after midnight.
A black SUV followed.
Lena copied Daniel Crane because Owen told her Daniel coordinated family security.
Daniel replied at 12:41:
Thank you, Dr. Ortiz. Sophia is safe and with family. Please do not alarm anyone.
Sophia was not with family.
At least not anyone admitting it.
Lena believed him.
The next morning news reported Sophia missing.
Lena called Owen.
He said timeline already established and Red Mesa visit was irrelevant.
She insisted.
Owen told her police knew.
They didn't.
Why didn't Lena go directly?
“I should have.”
Marcus said nothing.
She continued.
“Victor controlled half our funding. Owen sounded official. Daniel was her uncle. I told myself adults with more authority had information I didn't.”
Marcus knew feeling.
Authority creates laziness in bystanders too.
Lena saved email because Sophia’s behavior bothered her.
Years later, after grant leadership changed, she searched old missing-person file online and realized Red Mesa was never mentioned.
She contacted a detective.
He had retired.
She left message with department.
No reply.
Why not push harder?
Again:
Work.
Funding.
Life.
Assumption.
Regret.
“I failed her.”
Marcus finally spoke.
“You made a mistake.”
Lena looked at him.
“Don't soften it.”
“I’m not.”
He understood need for precision.
“You made a mistake. Daniel made a choice.”
Different.
Lena nodded slowly.

That distinction saved people from carrying someone else's crime.
