Chapter 16 - DANIEL SINGS

One evening Daniel entered Elias's room.

“Come downstairs.”

“Why?”

“Trust me.”

Dangerous phrase.

Elias followed.

An old keyboard sat in living room.

Daniel pressed one key.

Then sang.

His voice was rough.

Not the voice from old photograph.

Hearing loss had changed pitch perception, but he had adapted.

He could still sing.

Elias stared.

“You stopped.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I couldn't be who I was.”

Daniel had treated altered ability as ending.

Then watched Elias walk away from choir after one system became unsafe.

“Maybe leaving isn't same as stopping forever.”

Elias understood.

Daniel sang another line.

Elias joined.

No audience.

No recording.

Best music he had made in months.
