Chapter 6 - Brooke LennoxBrooke Lennox retained a lawyer before speaking with police.

That told us she understood the seriousness.

The forged deed claimed I personally appeared before her eight months earlier.

Her electronic notary journal contained an entry.

My name.

My supposed identification.

My supposed acknowledgment.

But no thumbprint.

No photocopy of the original ID.

No contemporaneous notes.

Her lawyer eventually arranged an interview with Detective Elena Morris from the financial crimes unit.

I was not present.

Robert received a summary later.

Brooke admitted Ashley called her.

They had been friends since college.

Ashley said my mobility had worsened.

Said I wanted to add David to the deed but found legal paperwork overwhelming.

Brooke agreed to meet.

“Did she meet Margaret?” Detective Morris asked.

Brooke hesitated.

“No.”

“Then whom did you notarize?”

“Ashley brought the signed document.”

“That is not notarization.”

“I know.”

“Did you know then?”

Brooke started crying.

“Yes.”

“Why do it?”

“Ashley said Margaret had signed it at home and just didn’t want strangers in the house.”

Brooke told herself she was helping a family avoid inconvenience.

Ashley paid her normal fee.

No bribe.

No elaborate conspiracy.

Just friendship.

A shortcut.

Robert read the summary and said:

“This is how fraud often looks.”

“What?”

“People doing one thing they know they shouldn’t because somebody they trust makes it sound harmless.”

Brooke admitted David knew.

He had been present when Ashley brought the document to her apartment.

He said:

“Mom signed already. We just need the stamp.”

That detail destroyed another possible excuse.

David knew I never appeared.

Brooke’s commission was suspended pending review.

Criminal exposure remained possible.

She agreed to cooperate.

Then she turned over text messages.

Ashley:

Need quick favor. Family deed. Nothing weird.

Brooke:

Margaret signing in front of me?

Ashley:

Already signed. She hates legal appointments. David says it’s fine.

Brooke:

Technically she needs to appear.

Ashley:

Come on. You know us.

Then David himself:

Brooke, Mom absolutely wants this. We’re just saving her the hassle.

I read that message several times.

Absolutely wants this.

Robert watched me.

“You don’t have to keep reading.”

“Yes, I do.”

The final message came after recording.

Ashley:

You saved our lives.

Brooke responded with a heart emoji.

Eight months later, I sat in Robert’s office staring at the little symbol.

How easily people celebrated what would eventually destroy them.
