Chapter 27 - The First MeetingTwo years after the kitchen conversation, David and I met in Robert’s conference room.

Neutral territory.

No Ashley.

No lawyers in the room, though Robert was nearby.

David looked older.

So did I.

“Hi, Mom.”

“Hi.”

He did not hug me.

Good.

He asked:

“How’s the house?”

“Still standing.”

“The roof?”

“New.”

He smiled.

“Dad would complain about the price.”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Then David said:

“I don’t expect you to forgive me.”

“Good.”

He nodded.

“I miss you.”

“I miss who I thought you were.”

That hurt him.

I saw it.

But truth was not cruelty simply because it hurt.

He said:

“I’m trying to become somebody you can know again.”

That was better.

Not “trust me.”

Not “I changed.”

Become.

Future tense.

Work.

We drank coffee.

Forty-five minutes.

Then left separately.

May you like

It was not reconciliation.

It was a beginning with boundaries.
