Chapter 23 - Brooke Loses Her StampBrooke’s consequence was quieter.

Her notary commission was revoked.
She faced legal penalties connected to the false acknowledgment and cooperated with the larger investigation.
She requested a meeting with me.
I agreed only with Robert present.
“I never thought they were stealing your house.”
“What did you think?”
“That they were doing paperwork you had already agreed to.”
“But you knew I hadn’t appeared.”
“Yes.”
“Then your entire job was the one thing you decided didn’t matter.”
Brooke started crying.
“I know.”
I did not comfort her.
Not cruelly.
Simply honestly.
Her discomfort belonged to her.
Before leaving she said:
“I’m sorry.”
I answered:
May you like
“I believe you are.”
