Chapter 15 - David’s First ConfessionDavid requested to speak through counsel.

Robert recommended I decline a private meeting.

Instead David provided a written statement to investigators.

He admitted knowing the deed was not signed before Brooke.

He claimed Ashley told him I had orally agreed.

That lie lasted two paragraphs.

Then he admitted he knew I had never agreed to joint ownership.

Why sign?

Debt.

Pressure.

Embarrassment.

He had lost $34,000 in speculative investments two years earlier.

Something Ashley did not initially know.

When she discovered it, she was furious.

Her business was already struggling.

They borrowed from Raymond.

Then more.

David convinced himself the house would someday be his.

Using equity now felt, in his words:

“like borrowing against my inheritance.”

I read that sentence slowly.

My inheritance.

Not his.

Mine to give.

His to expect only after I died and only if my estate plan still said so.

David admitted the guardianship petition was his idea after Robert? No, after Ashley raised concerns.

He had seen a coworker obtain conservatorship for an impaired parent.

He thought court authority would “stabilize things” if I resisted the loan.

Stabilize.

Again.

A professional word covering something ugly.

He claimed he did not intend to place me in a facility.

He believed I could rent a room nearby.

How generous.

When asked whether he believed I was incompetent, David answered:

“No.”

That single answer exposed the petition.

He had sworn otherwise.
