Chapter 19 - Moving DayDavid and Ashley moved out on day twenty-nine.

No eviction hearing became necessary.

They rented an apartment.

A very ordinary two-bedroom.

I stayed away while movers worked.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I did not want our last shared hour in that house to become spectacle.

When I returned, their rooms were empty.

The guest bedroom walls showed rectangles where pictures had hung.

My sewing room contained boxes of things Ashley had moved aside.

On the kitchen counter sat one key.

David’s.

No note.

I picked it up.

For three years I wanted them to build savings.

Instead they built entitlement.

But the emptiness did not feel victorious.

The house was too quiet.

That night I cried again.

Consequences could be correct and still hurt.
