Chapter 9 - Drill Sergeant HayesOne night after mail call, Hayes stopped me.

“Quinn.”

“Yes, Drill Sergeant.”

“You think I recognized your scars?”

I had wondered.

“Yes.”

“I didn't.”

“Then why did you freeze?”

He looked toward training field.

“My wife has scars from surgery. Different situation.”

He shrugged.

“I knew that look.”

“What look?”

“Waiting for everyone to decide you're suddenly made of glass.”

I stared.

He continued:

“So I made them look away.”

That was it.

No secret connection.

No dramatic coincidence.

Just empathy based on experience.

I liked that better.

Then Hayes added:

“You also need to stop treating everyone noticing you as threat.”

I stiffened.

“I'm working on it.”

“Work faster. Army has formations.”

I laughed before I could stop.

He pretended not to notice.
