Chapter 29 - Back to Fort Leonard WoodThree years after Basic Training, I returned to Fort Leonard Wood for temporary training assignment.

Different rank.
Different unit.
Same Missouri cold.
I walked past obstacle course.
Mud looked exactly as ugly.
A new group of trainees crawled beneath wire.
Drill Sergeant Hayes still worked there, now senior drill sergeant.
He recognized me.
“Quinn.”
“Drill Sergeant.”
“You got promoted.”
“So did you.”
“Don't get comfortable.”
Some things should not change.
He looked at my left arm.
I wore a short-sleeve physical training shirt.
Scars fully visible.
He did not comment.
That was perfect.
Then a recruit fell in mud and started apologizing.
Hayes yelled:
“Get up. Nobody cares that you're dirty.”
I laughed.
He heard.
“Something funny, Sergeant Quinn?”
“No, Drill Sergeant.”
“Good.”
May you like
I had become exactly what I once wanted:
Ordinary enough to be yelled at.
