Chapter 4 - Miller’s StatementPrivate Miller asked to speak with me.

I said no.

Drill Sergeant Hayes said good.

“You are not required to participate in his emotional education.”

I almost laughed.

Miller gave investigators his statement without me.

He admitted pushing me.

Denied intending to expose my scars.

Both could be true.

He also admitted weeks of harassment.

Why?

His answer:

“She acted like she was better than everybody.”

I had barely spoken to him.

Apparently silence could be arrogance if someone needed it to be.

Three other recruits described his behavior.

Jordan described repeated interference during marches.

Another recruit described Miller deliberately knocking gear from my bunk.

The command handled discipline.

I was not told every detail because privacy worked both ways.

Miller was removed from our platoon pending disposition.

That should have ended his part in my story.

Mostly it did.

But before leaving, he sent a written apology through cadre.

One sentence stood out:

I thought if I could make you react, I could prove you were pretending to be tough.

I folded the letter.

That was exactly what my family had done for years.

People could not tolerate a quiet person without inventing what silence meant.
