Chapter 10 - The Insurance SettlementAt nineteen, I received settlement.

Or thought I did.

My father told me medical costs consumed most.

Investigators found insurance paid $2.8 million total connected to fire.

Property.

Business interruption.

Personal injury.

My designated injury settlement:

$640,000.

I had received less than $70,000 directly, mostly for uncovered medical expenses and living costs.

Where was rest?

A “Mara Quinn Recovery Trust.”

I had never seen it.

Trustee:

Robert Quinn.

My father.

The trust terms required remaining balance transfer to me at twenty-five.

I was six months away.

Suddenly his renewed interest in my military status had another explanation.

If he could portray me as incapable?

Could he keep control?

Not automatically.

But maybe delay accounting.

Army lawyer referred me to civilian trust counsel in Oklahoma.

Her name was Danielle Park.

She requested accounting.

My father refused.

Then his attorney offered settlement.

$150,000 if I signed release.

I laughed when Danielle told me.

“What's funny?”

“He always offers money when he wants silence.”

“Don't answer personally.”

I didn't.

Documents would.
