Chapter 8 - The Room Beneath the Whitmore Center

The room existed.

Behind a secured utility corridor.

No secret tunnel.

No cinematic vault.

Just an old data facility sealed during renovation.

Military engineers opened under warrant.

Dust.

Server racks.

Archived storage.

A faded sign:

COMMUNICATIONS TEST LAB B

Evan stared.

“This was relay lab.”

Fourteen years earlier.

Same room where his test data had been processed.

Whitmore Leadership Center had literally been built over evidence.

Maybe not intentionally originally.

But symbolism unavoidable.

Forensic teams imaged servers.

Mara did not touch.

She walked wall.

A marker line:

WSS TEST NODE 3

Whitmore Strategic Systems.

Evan whispered:

“I was here.”

He remembered being twenty-one, telling engineers packets dropped under interference.

One engineer agreed.

Next week engineer transferred.

Who?

Name:

Laura Kim.

Tessa located.

Now professor in California.

Laura agreed interview.

She had filed technical dissent.

Shaw told her report “handled.”

Then Whitmore offered job elsewhere.

She refused.

She left defense industry.

Her saved emails corroborated Evan.

More.

Server logs showed Martin Shaw manually injecting exam-access records into Evan’s user profile two days after test dispute.

Direct proof.

Evan sat when shown.

“Fourteen years.”

Mara touched shoulder.

He did not pull away.

Then data on Julian.

Original complaints.

Witness video from locker hallway still existed.

Julian shoved cadet once during heated argument.

No severe injury.

But enough misconduct.

Witness statements had been altered from “Julian initiated” to “mutual confrontation.”

Shaw.

Another case at prep school outside jurisdiction but records showed donor pressure.

Then hundreds others.

Rourke looked sick.

“Careers.”

Some cadets expelled based manipulated data.

Some promoted unfairly.

Review board needed.

Not simply reverse everything; original evidence varied.

Mara proposed independent case-by-case panel.

No blanket.

Then major file.

WHITMORE RELAY FINAL VALIDATION

Original result:

failed stability threshold 3 of 5 scenarios.

Final report delivered to Thomas Vance:

passed 5 of 5.

Modification author:

Martin Shaw account.

But technical edit initiated from Victor Whitmore executive certificate.

Tessa said:

“This is closer.”

Victor had digitally approved revised report.

Could he claim reliance on engineers?

Maybe.

Email:

Laura Kim to Victor:

Final report cannot state full pass. Data does not support.

Victor replied:

Resolve with Martin. Operational sponsor needs deployable answer.

Then later:

Shaw to Victor:

Report normalized.

Victor:

Send.

That was strong.

Mara closed eyes.

Broken Spear not random equipment defect.

Decision.

Yet mission enemies also jammed; equipment alone not cause. Keep nuance.

Then another email after operation:

Victor to Shaw:

No reopening Blackridge student issue. Vance family connection creates unacceptable litigation exposure.

There.

He knew Evan framed.

Chose silence.

Then Thomas Vance:

Correct my son's record and disclose test discrepancy.

Victor:

Doing so will imply causation not established.

Thomas:

Truth does not require causation.

No response.

Mara whispered:

“Dad tried.”

Evan stared.

“He should’ve tried sooner.”

“Yes.”

Both.

Then server showed donation agreements.

Whitmore Foundation pledged $25 million to leadership center during same month Rourke's predecessor declined procurement inquiry.

Potential quid pro quo? Need evidence.

No explicit.

Could be appearance.

Investigators widen.

Then Porter's logs showed she changed camera retention rules to allow quick purge.

After slap, she panicked and used.

She confessed.

She acted because believed Julian scandal would jeopardize donation and her husband's contract.

No Victor call.

Again systemic anticipation.

Then Julian came to evidence review through counsel? He doesn't get all. But investigators informed him complaint records restored.

He asked:

“Can I read other cadet’s statement?”

Victim privacy limits.

No.

Good.

He requested contact to apologize.

Victim, former cadet Marcus Hale, declined.

Julian accepted.

First boundary.

Then conduct tribunal scheduled.

Victor offered Julian transfer to private officer program through connections.

Julian refused.

His father furious.

“Why?”

“Because that is how we got here.”

Victor hung up.

Julian sat alone.

He was beginning to understand that protection could become cage.

Then Mara got message from Evan:

Come outside.

He stood near Whitmore Center entrance.

Looking at father’s old signature on display plaque? Thomas maybe not on plaque. Instead donor wall includes Victor. Evan stared.

“Do you want building renamed?”

Mara asked.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Names are less important than records inside.”

Good.

Then Rourke joined.

He admitted he had accepted Whitmore Foundation money for family support charity? Maybe not necessary. Better his own vulnerability.

Rourke’s wife had cancer? Sensitive. Avoid. He had received Whitmore-sponsored fellowship years ago. Could appear bias. He disclosed.

“I trained at War College on Whitmore fellowship.”

Mara:

“Did that influence?”

“I don’t think.”

“Then independent review decides.”

He nodded.

No defensive.

Then forensic analyst called.

One folder encrypted.

Name:

SPEAR-17 / LIABILITY

Mara and Rourke both stared.

Broken Spear survivors.

Whitmore had kept liability files on them.

Seventeen people.

Personal vulnerabilities.

Career histories.

Possible leverage.

The old procurement failure had not merely been covered.

The company had monitored survivors for nearly a decade.

Including Mara.

Including Rourke.

May you like

And one file contained a photograph taken outside Mara’s apartment three months earlier.

Someone was still watching.
