Chapter 14 - The Trial Begins

Victor’s federal trial began eleven months after slap.
Mara testified second week.
Prosecution avoided theatrics.
Contracts.
Emails.
Server logs.
Original and altered reports.
Cadet files.
Money flows.
Victor sat still.
Older.
Less powerful.
Defense first attacked Martin Shaw.
Shaw admitted crimes.
He manipulated.
He profited.
He sometimes acted without Victor.
Prosecution agreed.
Conspiracy does not require every act ordered.
Then Elaine Porter.
She admitted camera deletion was her decision.
Defense highlighted:
Victor never called after slap.
Correct.
This helped him on obstruction tied assault.
The prosecution had not charged that specific deletion as Victor act.
Good.
Then Evan testified.
He described test.
Frame.
Whitmore offer.
Defense:
“Mr. Whitmore never told you he framed you?”
“No.”
“Never admitted?”
“No.”
“Your accusation depends on Shaw.”
“My technical data doesn’t.”
Strong.
Then Thomas waiver.
Defense showed father signed risk.
Evan acknowledged.
No hiding family.
Then Mara.
She described Broken Spear only as permitted.
Relay deficiencies contributed to communication problems but mission outcome had multiple causes.
She refused simple blame.
Defense asked:
“Colonel Vance, you have spent nine years believing my client responsible for traumatic mission.”
Mara:
“I spent nine years investigating decisions.”
“Personal?”
“Yes.”
“Bias?”
“Possible.”
“Then why trust you?”
Mara:
“You shouldn’t.”
Courtroom shifted.
“Trust documents.”
Prosecutor later smiled.
Then defense raised mark.
“You and Commander Rourke share secret survivor tattoo.”
“Yes.”
“Cult-like loyalty?”
“No.”
“Rourke apologized on sight.”
“Yes.”
“Before facts.”
“Yes.”
“Would you agree symbols can distort judgment?”
“Yes.”
Defense surprised.
Mara continued:
“That is why current case should rest on records.”
Good.
Then Victor testified.
He admitted pressuring for deployable answers.
“I believed relay performance acceptable under operational need.”
He admitted asking Shaw to protect Julian from disproportionate consequences.
“Did you ask falsification?”
“No.”
He admitted knowing Evan framed after Broken Spear.
“Why not correct?”
“Counsel advised correction during liability inquiry could be construed admission.”
He chose company.
Then cadet continuity program.
He said intended mentorship.
Shaw corrupted.
Then prosecution showed:
Julian cannot have another formal incident. Fix classification.
Victor:
“I meant review classification.”
“Why say fix?”
“Common language.”
Could be.
Then:
Keep donors out of official channel.
“Why?”
“To avoid appearance.”
That sounded bad.
Then relay altered report.
Laura warned.
Victor:
“I believed engineers resolved.”
Prosecutor:
“You wrote ‘send’ after Shaw said normalized.”
“Yes.”
“Did you ask what normalized meant?”
“No.”
Then post-Broken Spear contractor suspension sentence removed.
Victor said counsel handled.
He accepted.
Case not cartoon.
Then prosecutor asked:
“Mr. Whitmore, how many times must someone else misunderstand your intentions before intentions stop being defense?”
Objection.
Sustained.
Jury instructed.
Still line lingered.
Then Julian testified.
Father looked at son.
Julian’s voice shook.
He admitted own misconduct.
No blaming.
Then texts.
Victor:
I handled it.
Do not apologize until facts cleaned.
Defense:
“Parental advice.”
Julian:
“Yes.”
“Did father ever tell you lie?”
“No.”
“Ever tell hit Mara?”
“No.”
“Ever tell erase footage?”
“No.”
So Julian did not convict father by emotions.
Then:
“Why are you here?”
Julian looked at Victor.
“Because I benefited from system I didn’t question.”
“And?”
“I’m trying to stop doing that.”
Victor looked down.
Elise testified after.
Divorce documents.
Victor’s words.
Again, no single smoking gun.
But pattern plus documents.
Jury deliberated six days.
Verdict:
guilty on procurement fraud.
guilty on conspiracy to alter certain official records.
guilty on obstruction involving relay post-incident documents.
not guilty on one count alleging direct bribery of academy official.
not guilty on one count tied to camera deletion.
Mixed.
Precise.
Victor closed eyes.
Julian cried.
Mara felt nothing at first.
Then relief that jury distinguished.
Not revenge.
Then reporters asked Mara.
She said:
“The jury spoke on charges before it.”
Nothing more.
Victor would be sentenced later.

Blackridge review continued regardless.
Because institutional reform should not depend on one conviction.
